When veiwing the quicktime of Aharon Rabinowitz’s excellent z scale tutorial I noticed his comp had a 3d guide grid that represented the “floor” of the 3d space in his comp. the quicktime is here so you can see what I’m refering to : https://www.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/z_scale/CC_Z-ScaleCD.mov

For the life of me I can’t find how to activate such a grid in AE, so I figure he must have made it on his own. I’d love to employ such a guide grid for my own AE 3d comps. Does anyone know the best way to make them? I’m especially stumped because when I down- loaded the project files of Aharon’s tutorial the grid doesn’t seem to be on a layer, although it renders in the finished movie. I always thought that all elements of a comp had to be on a layer of some sort. Any help would be well appreciated. Thanks.

In that first comp, “0. Normal Z-Scale”, if you click on the Comp “shy” switch (The little guy peeking over a fence, nose in your business), suddenly the layer “purple Solid 2” will appear. It has the Grid effect on it. Use the shy switch to unclutter your layer stack, they still render but are out of sight. There’s a shy switch for each layer, if his noggin is below the fence he’ll shy-out when you hit the Comp Shy switch above. It’s kinda magic.

Thanks for the replies. Yikesmikes post sorted it out for me quite nicely. Darn shy layers. Much appreciated.
