  • Recompresing DV to Uncompressed to add Graphics and captions

Posted by Jon S ray on November 21, 2005 at 10:25 pm

Hi All, as a FCP newbie after years of Avid a read of the manual has thrown up some questions on workflow which I would be grateful for some kind soul to help with.

I want to work at DV rez and then add Graphics and captions. If I do this in a DV setting sequence, I am assuming that all these elements will be processed and rendered at DV quality. (eg live type captions) If so is it possible to “recompress” this sequence with uncompressed settings and then add the extra graphics. I would like to avoid recapture if at all possible.

As a quick aside how is Livetype for broadcast caption work (straps, credit rolls etc..) and does it use fairly standard fonts. Also would like to know if you can import additional fonts.

Thanks in advance for your time and patience.

Just edit in DV as normal. Right at the end of the project, change the sequence settings to “uncompressed” and re-render everything. Now play out of your uncompressed card, Decklink, Kona whatever, over SDI to DigiBeta.

[Graeme Nattress] “Right at the end of the project, change the sequence settings to “uncompressed” and re-render everything. Now play out of your uncompressed card,”

If this is an NTSC project, you will need to ensure that all of your DV footage is moved one scan line in order to playback correctly in the right field order. Your Center setting should be 0,1 in the Motion tab for each DV clip.

That’s only if you put DV footage on a uncompressed timeline, and indeed, FCP seems to get it right these days, and even flips field order if need be. If you just change the codec, not the frame size, you should be able to play out over SDI without fiddling at all.
