    Hello mates,

I use both an Avid Express and an FCP system here at work and when I try to do the same thing on both systems, I get different results. On the Avid, I export a reference file from my project and a small file is generated (about 30k) and it’s almost instant (less than a sec). I later take this file to media cleaner for encoding and get my final render. When I try to do this on FCP, my file size is huge (about 60MB) and takes close to 7 minutes to produce a reference file for a 5 minute piece. I have a feeling I’m generating my reference file wrong (Export>Final Cut Pro Movie>(uncheck make movie self-contained) and save). Can someone please tell me how to properly save a reference file that points to original media that I can import in Cleaner and is under 100K? Is this even possible in FCP? Thanks for any help. God Bless.

    Cheers,

    Bud

Which god? Pat Roberston’s or mine?

The reference export process is exactly the same and yields the same results in both apps: a tiny reference file that merely points back to the source media. So, we’re left with the conclusion that you’re doing something wrong or something odd is occurring as you hit the blue button. Which it could be is impossible to tell without watching over your shoulder but my first guess is the self-contained switch is somehow getting bounced back to its ON state since what you are ending up with is, in fact, a self-contained movie.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
