Missing Render Files and Capture Files on FINAL CUT PRO 5
Okay, issue number 1: I’ve been using Motion as my main title and compositing tool for Final Cut projects. Once I make something in Motion, I import the Motion project into Final Cut and place it on the timeline. I then of course have to render it. All is going well with that except recently my render files are starting to come up missing. When I start up Final Cut, it continualy tries to access specific render files. Example: Celebrations-FIN-0000001c. The word “Celebrations” is from a Motion project. The “FIN” render file is in the Final Cut Pro Documents on our SATA RAID. This problem is getting increasingly worse. Instead of just being able to open Final Cut and get to work, I have to sit there and hit “Cancel” when it’s trying to access these render files. I’ve tried searching for them, but no luck.
ISSUE #2: Sometimes when I open Final Cut Pro some of my capture files are gone. I then have to batch capture them back in.
PS. I’m working on Final Cut Pro 5 and my entire system, Mac and all, is only 5 months old.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tracking files in FCP depends on the user placing them where FCP expects them to be. It’s possible to put capture and render files anywhere, even in places FCP suggests. But that doesn’t mean they will be located by the application. larryjordan.biz has an article on how to set up your media drive and how to tell FCP’s rpefs where the media files are to be kept.
1. Should be a Render Files folder on that drive that contains a folder for your project. If it’s being placed in folder called FCP Documents, FCP may not know to look for it there.
2. Same issue, maybe. There should be a Capture Scratch folder that contains a folder for your project. That’s where FCP looks.Now, to add to the confusion, here are several weird things that can tell FCP to delete files. However, they are 99% user-caused. The other 1% cannot be explained but your situation doesn’t sound like ti falls into that category. Without watching you work, it’s impossible to know, but I can honestly tell you that MOST of our “disappearing files” posts turn out to be user-errors, easily fixed.

I had this same problem a while back. I got rid of all the ‘old’ Motion projects that I was not using and then trashed my preferences and it seemed to take care of the situation. I don’t know what the deal is here though.
