  • Preserving Keyframe Moves in Final Cut when switching footage

Is there a way to replace footage in a keyframed move without disturbing the keyframes?

I was suggested using a nested composition, but not sure if that’s the best way.

    Thanks,
    Lauren

Click once on (highlight) the “old” clip (before you “remove” it) and hit Apple-C (Copy).

Replace (Overwrite) the “old” clip with the “new” clip.

Click once on (highlight) the “new” clip and hit Option-V (Paste Attributes).

When the Attributes window comes up, choose as many of the check-boxes that apply (“Basic Motion” is the one for movement and position key-rames.)

An even more effective method is to copy the new clip from the bin (or wherever). Highlight the old clip and right click and choose paste attributes. Choose to paste the media. In this way it swaps out the footage, but leaves the filters and keyframes intact.

FCP can do weird things when you paste keyframes. It seems to put them wherever it wants.

Don’t forget that you can disclose your keyframes right in the Sequence Timeline with Option-T. If one of them is visible in your Timeline clip you can drag them back in unison to where they need to be.

    Don’t worry Mr. B. I have a cunning plan…

    Thanks!

    I have some questions:

-How do I “replace (overwrite)” as you mention in the second step?

-Do I select the clip in the timeline or bin when following these instructions?

    Thanks,
    Lauren

[Lauren] “-How do I “replace (overwrite)” as you mention in the second step?”

Drag it from the Viewer window over to the Canvas window.

    The choices pop up.

Or there are keyboard choices for all of these.

[Lauren] “-Do I select the clip in the timeline or bin when following these instructions?”

    Click on it.
