More Fun with 24p EDLs
Hi All,
I’ve seen quite a bit around these parts regarding 30fps projects,24fps EDLs, onlining, Cinema Tools, etc. But I haven’t seen this exact problem. Has anyone had this happen and found a good workaround?
I’ve got a DV project in FCP5, shot on the DVX100 with Advanced Pulldown, captured to remove advanced pulldown in FCP, edited in a 23.98 timebase. Now, when I export a 23.98 EDL straight from my FCP sequence, all of the TC is bug-nuts crazy. Not even remotely the same TC, not even TC found on that tape.
If I copy my 23.98 footage into a 29.97 sequence, export a 30fps EDL from that, convert it to 24fps in Cinema Tool and re-import it in FCP, it is kind of correct. It’s the most correct I’ve been able to get an EDL so far, but some of the clips are still 5 seconds or so off in the TC. Will I have to live with it and slip my shots after the online capture?
So, is this the best it will ever be, or does anyone know how to get a real 23.98 EDL out of FCP? Am I asking the impossible?

I’m pretty sure that EDL’s can’t handle 23.98 sequences.. after all they are 20 year old technology..
What platform are you going to online with? FCP?

We will not online in FCP, I am hoping we will be uprezing our DV to HDCAM and color correcting in the Quantel eQ.
Wait a minute, if it’s 20 year old technology, shouldn’t they have gotten it to work by now? (ha ha)
I’ve also tried exporting the sequence as XML, and the TC is great when I do this…..but about 25% of my clips are missing. Why?

When you exported your XML did you make sure to check the box that says “include master clips…”? Also I know that there are two different versions of XML, version 1 and version 2. FCP 5 exports a version 2 XML by default unless you specify version 1. If you are going to a program that will only import a version 1 XML it’s possible that you would lose some of your clips.

do you have any speed change in your sequence? It often causes problem.
Something worth noting about capturing with advanced pulldown… the “media start” and “media end” timecode for reversed pulldown clips in advanced mode stays in 30fps format. But FCP convert the clips TC to 24fps when exporting an EDL. I did not use such wokflow so far for 24PA, but exporting a 23.98 sequence with clips captured with advanced pulldown remvoval seems to give a good timecode.
so… did you remove the pulldown uppon capture or with cinema tool ? Can you check that the “media” TC (Item Properties -> Timming) of your clips in the timeline fits with the tape TC ?

I am taking out my speed changes as we speak, so we will see if that clears it up.I’ll let you know!
All the clips were captured with advanced pulldown removal in FCP, not using Cinema Tools. I will check my media start/end TC against the tape and let you know.

What I meant is that the EDL timecode is on par with the clip’s timecode (but converted from TC30 to TC24). I didn’t compare it against the tape timecode, but it means that FCP at least exports the EDL correctly.
One thing that is ALWAYS buggy with speed changes and EDLs is variable speed change. Sometimes even a constant speed change can turn into a variable speed change, so you really need to double check.
How are you checking the EDL ? are you actualy importing it on the EQ or are you reimporting it in FCP ? Sometimes I exported EDLs that didn’t reimport in FCP correctly, but did well on Avid Symphony… best way I found is to apply a TC reader to all the clips in FCP, open the EDL in Text Edi and compare the in/out manualy. It’s a pain for long form seuqnces, but it’s quick enough for tv spots.

I had been checking the EDL after importing it into FCP. I just tried your technique of using TC reader in the original sequence, and dang, the EDL is still way off when I check it against the clips. But that was a great suggestion, thanks very much.
And taking out my clips with speed changes hasn’t helped either.
I’m going to reinstall FCP 5, and then I’m gong to offer my G5 the blood of many male chickens, in hopes this will appease the Gods of Apple.
