  Beginner…couple questions about FCP on iMac??

  Hi there,

  I am about to purchase an iMac and was wondering how much RAM I should get to do the work that I have ahead of me. I am a post-grad student doing documentary production and I basically have to edit short docs that I shoot that are between 1-10mins. We are shooting on Sony DSR-570 cameras and therefore, I don’t have to worry about HD. My main question is about RAM…Because I am a student, money is an issue so I want enough RAM to run FCP effectively but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Any suggestions if 1GB is sufficient or should I have 1.5GB? Also, because my school is running FCP4.5 I have to get my hands on it as well. I won’t be able to hand in my assignments using FCP5. Any suggestions where to find 4.5 for cheap? Thanks a lot in advance. This is a great forum…very helpful!

  ebay probably for FCP 4.5… ANY version of FCP 4 will upgrade to 4.5 BTW… When you order your iMac, have only ONE slot involved for the RAM chip you buy… i.e. if a gig, then a single chip for it is probably the way to go, then you can add more RAM if you feel you need it. Running 4.5 isn’t as RAM intensive as 5 I’ll bet… But Tiger uses more RAM than Panther did so at LEAST a gig for starters I’d think.

  Also you’ll need a firewire drive for your media storage, don’t use the internal for this… I’d look at either WeibeTech or Granite Digital for the FW storage (if you buy the enclores from them, then buy a Hitachi drive and install it yourself, you’ll save some bucks there too), though the G-Raid I just bought is a beauty! This guy is sooooo sweet, but not cheap.

  What’s the going rate for these, as well as for the additional RAM? Also, would FW 400 drives be adequate for NON-critical/NON-time-intensive personal at-home type work?
