strobing graphic
Posted by Kent Beeson on November 4, 2005 at 6:37 pmHello:
Currently, my seq is LOWER field dominance editing DVcam footage with Livetype graphics (also lower fd).. but this one LT billboard push transition (moves from up to down, revealing incoming shot beneath) strobes and has the “double strobe” burnt into it when rendered to MPEG 2. I have a screen snap I could send if someone needed to see the problem. The strobe is there when parked as a still viewed on TV monitor, but not on 17″ apple display…I’ve tired changing fd to NONE, but then of course my DVcam footage strobes, but not the LT graphic in question. Any thoghts?
Thanks much

November 4, 2005 at 6:56 pmThanks Kevin – I’ve tried about 5 different filters (FCP and plugins) but none have worked…I could freeze the frame and use this, but really want the moving video not a FF. Any other ideas out there?

Which 5 did you try?

November 4, 2005 at 9:10 pmWell, Video = De-interlace, Flicker filter…Stibs = field swapper, de-interlacer…Too much too soon = blend fields, fast de interlace, reduce interlace flicker…any suggestions?

November 4, 2005 at 9:15 pmTry this:
Add the “Gaussian Blur” filter.
Start it at about 0.25 and slowly add blur (up to 1.5 or so) until you see results you want on the external video monitor.

November 4, 2005 at 9:30 pmGood advice – I’ll try it asap, currently in the middle of a render however, but question is – the problem is not so much flicker as color bleed/double image AND flicker. I could send you a screen grab if need be.
Thanks

November 4, 2005 at 9:37 pmAlso:
If you re-position graphics or any video image in FCP, make SURE the VERTICAL setting for each KEY-FRAME (start, stop or hold) is always a EVEN INTEGER (Even Whole Number). Examples: 4, not 3 / -144, not -143.27 / 336, not 335.62 / 12 not 11.The positioning settings/info (as well as many other settings) are found under the “Motion” tab in the Viewer.
Vertical position is the number in the RIGHT window in the area called “Center” (the horizontal position is displayed in the LEFT window). -

November 4, 2005 at 9:57 pmGood advice again – just rendered the part I need as a test, after blurring and rounding #’s as advised. Strobing not so much the problem, bad image and color bleed though. Wonder if I could send a screen grab to someone to look at?

November 4, 2005 at 10:48 pmOK, after much fiddling with positioning, replacing with a FF of the video, rendering an MPEG 2 – result = still a double image whether moving or still…the effect is simply about a 2 second move from off screen top to off screen bottom, full screen, revealing incoming shot as this graphic goes off camera. Is it possible the image has too fine lines? When parked, on external monitor as a still – double image, flicker…when played on monitor fine/excellent. When rendered into MPEG 2 (for DVD) it has the above STILL problem, even in play mode, not just still. Would love to know if this can be fixed or have to live with because of MPEG 2 or DV, I don’t know.

November 4, 2005 at 11:24 pmWhat happens if you make the move take FOUR seconds (6 seconds)?
I know that you may NEED the move to take 2 seconds, but we need to experiment.A 2-second move across the screen from top to bottom (or reverse) is pretty fast and would “wiggle” pretty badly on the external monitor if you “parked” (paused playback) during the move.
I’m not sure if your field-order is correct.
