Does this HDV > Kona 2 > to SD workflow make sense??

We have all of the following and want to keep away from the HDV mpeg issues and stay at least in 1080 or 720 dvcpro hd territory before going to SD.

    Shoot on Z1U, PAL 50i, shutter 1/50.

In FCPHD; Capture HD analog out of the Z1U via AJA HD10a to Kona 2 HD-SDI at 1080 or 720

Use Nattress standards converter to convert PAL to NTSC, to either 30p or 24p depending on the project.

Edit dvcpro hd 1080 or 720 timeline.

Nest the HD sequence in to an 8-bit uncompressed SD timeline, render, and dub.

Any suggestions, tips, hints greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Well, kinda.

Here’s what I would do. first, where’s the destination audience…PAL or NTSC land? WHere do you live, PAL or NTSC land?

I’d capture and edit in PAL then at the end, transfer to NTSC, rather than transcode your entire source footage to NTSC. If you are going to do that, I’d just convert the 50i HDV tapes to DVCPRo HD 720p60.

Also, you won’t have to render an 8 bit SD timeline as the Kona 2 will downconvert for you on the fly.

I don’t see the point in coming in analogue. Neither do I see the point of converting HDV to DVCproHD, as you’re just moving from one highly compressed format to another.

    I’d:

    Capture HDV as native HD.

    Do edit.

“Upgrade” timeline to 8bit-uncompressed. De-interlace. Do final render.

That’s it for the PAL version, just downconvert and you’re laughing. For NTSC, conform to 23.98fps in Cinema Tools, then downconvert to 24p NTSC.

My de-interlace tools in Film Effects work good for this, and this route, if you can deal with the 4% slowdown in the NTSC version, will produce the best results possible.

    Graeme,
would your recommend the adding of titles, graphics, motion play arounds & so on before or after “ugrading” Timeline to 8-bits uncompressed ?

No. They’ll get the benefit also when the timeline gets upgraded.
