  • Is it possible to edit sound on a sub-frame level?

Posted by Beelaster on November 1, 2005 at 5:44 pm

I want to sync up multiple sound sources ( a live room and board mixes of a show) and I need to get this one part in phase but FCP will not allow me to drag it freely. Or I just don’t know how to do it. I would love to solve this w/o having to go into Logic, conform everything, etc. Right not the clip is 1/2 of one frame off.

Do any of youse guys know how to accomplish this?

    Thanks in advance for replying.

Can’t be done within FCP. However, I’m not sure if Soundtrack has more control (I’ve only used it a couple times). If it has more precise control, you can export your audio into that program, do your tweaks, and reimport into FCP. Of course, you could do the same with any actual audio editing program you may have, but Soundtrack seems to be a more seemless option.

Don’t know if you can accomplish exactly what you want, but Sub-Frame audio EDITING is possible inside FCP.

TO access Sub-Frame Audio in FCP

    Click audio into Viewer, then:

    1. Magnify Glass (Zoom) Tool-Click Upscale (Frame shows as Large Grey Area)
    2. Arrow Tool-Click on FRAME in question.
    3. Option-Click to add key-nodes at sub-frame level (1/100th frame.)
    4. Arrow Tool-Click/Drag node levels.

Look at these pages in the PDF manual that comes with FCP:

    Thanks, Matte.

I understand what you are proposing. What I need to do is nudge the audio to the right (the entire track) so that it lands between frames. The audio (two stereo pairs) is from a separate source than the video and for some reason one of the two pairs syncs fine with the video and the other doesn’t. But they were taken at the same rate, etc. and so this is a curious thing.

I know I could take them into Logic, etc. but there is no guarantee that they won’t come back together a half frame out-

Maybe this is the part where I get down with timecode between apps, etc. instead of just eyeballing it.

    Thanks for the reply
