  • Any hidden key to NOT load sequences during launch of FCP?

Posted by Michael Buday on November 1, 2005 at 3:17 pm

Most of the other NLE’s I use have a “do not load sequence at launch” key that can be held down while the application is launching – usually this is something like CTRL + SHIFT + P.

Does FCP have any equivalent launch modifiers? I ask because I almost always want FCP to load the last sequence I was working on (and it’s set that way in the preferences), but there are times when I’d like to open the project without opening a sequence.

Does anyone know of a list of “hidden” keystrokes (usually supplied by the programmers of the app) that could save your butt from time to time?

The way I accomplish this to create a project called (are you ready?) “New Project”.

I set up all the windows, presets, and bin headings the way I prefer.
I have a “clean” Timeline with :30 of Bars & Tone, a generic slate (even a version with an animated countdown).
I save the project in this “ready” condition and LOCK the file in the Mac’s “Get Info” window.
This keeps this “master copy” from being accidentally modified.

Then, when I want to begin a new project I go to my FCP Documents Folder and double-click this “New Project” and, after FCP opens, I immediately “Save As” the REAL name of my project.
When you do this, you’ll automatically have both your original “New Project” locked file and the Newly-named unlocked (ready to edit) version.

Thanks Rob. I’m new to the Mac platform after being on Windows for SO many years, so just hearing how to lock a file is really helpful.

I usually do something similar to your mehtod of creating a “template” when starting new projects, which of course is very helpful. My main reason for asking about modifiers during boot-up is for those times when you know you want to open a certain project, but you don’t want to load the last sequences that were open when you closed that project. This is really useful if you have a project with a corrupt sequence that attempts to load each time you open the project.

Anyway, after being forced to cut my current show on FCP, I’m learning a lot and liking much of what I’ve found so far.

    All the best,
