photoshop quick mask for import to FCP
Hello to all,
Having a brain freeze… I haven’t used quick mask mode in months and have forgotten the steps to create an image with an alpha channel which will be imported into Final Cut Pro. I have a still image of a scroll with a background. I need to see ONLY the scroll in Final Cut Pro so the scroll will show on top of my video image. How do I mask out the background in Photoshop 7 so when I import into Final Cut Pro I will see only the scroll?

Don’t panic, the quick mask is only one way of doing this, and it’s button is on the bottom of the tool pallet. Then you just paint with a brush, click back to the program and you get your selection which you can save. Delete the background, (make sure your object is on a layer not the background).
At this point, I usually bring the psd file into FCP as a sequence rather than a targa file, and then copy and paste the layer(s) you want into your main sequence. This way you’re guaranteed aa transparent background. I have found that since CS2 and FCP5 alpha channels on Targas don’t always come across properly, so I have made the psd sequence thing a regular part of my workflow.

I usually save a selection as a new channel in the Select menu. Usually, you have to reverse the alpha channel with the CMD + I command in PS. Then I flatten and save as a PICT.
