Wich is the best Title tool plugin?
Posted by Lebrett on October 27, 2005 at 12:18 pmI want your opinion: I need a good title tool plugin for FCP. Fast and with a preview of the background while you type.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

October 27, 2005 at 12:23 pmBoris Text 3D is outstanding and included with FCP. We use that all the time.
LiveType is outstanding and you can bring in a background to type over it.

October 27, 2005 at 12:36 pmYou don’t have a preview of your background (current frame) while you type in Boris 3D. This is a major problem for us since we need to ajust text with the current frame.

October 27, 2005 at 1:39 pmThe CHV Text Collection is excellent, but outside of Live Type I don’t think any of them allow you to see the background as you are typing in the viewer. 90% of the time tho, I do my titles in Photoshop. You could do this and export a stili frame for your background, but I don’t understand why it’s so critical for you to see that, it only takes a second to move the type around.

October 27, 2005 at 2:32 pmWe are a french-Canadian Post House. We re-package and subtitle a lot of U.S. shows. Each Canadian Broadcaster have it’s own logo at the bottom of the screen. One time it is on the left, the other it is on the right. Can’t put text there. In an another situation we have to adjust text just along what is going on on the sreen. Much faster to position the text right in the first place in the title tool. Since we do something like 300 subtitles and supers each shows…. do the math 🙂
We need something fast and efficient. Avid Title tool is not perfect but offers those basics fonctionnalities. Even more with their Fast Render option. With this we can copy-paste all those titles from Word to AVID in a matter of minutes and then park them in the timeline. GREAT feature.
So, Anybody knows a text plugin for FCP that meet those requirements?
Thanks.

October 27, 2005 at 3:05 pmThe full version of Boris Graffitti will allow you to drop your video into a well, and it’ll open up in Graffitti with your bg video.

This has been beaten to death in here, but no, there is no decent titling plug in FCPHD that allows you to see the text over Timeline video as in many other NLEs. It is a major shortcoming for the exact reason you mention as well as many others. Sure you can go out into any number of programs and do a killer “moving” title or two, but having real titling capabilities within FCP like Premiere Pro, Pinnacle, Avid, Leitch, Video Toaster, Inscriber etc., etc. have are unfortunately currently a lost dream in FCP. I have finally resorted to using a Boris Red Static generator on its own track, above the Timeline area I am working on, so at least I can use the update button to more quickly check text color, placement, and be able to actually add a gradient rectangle or other vector shape in one pass, as well as just being able to add text.

October 28, 2005 at 7:51 amThe big minus with CHV. These are bit map based and not vector based like TItle 3D, LiveType and Motion.
No mattter the functionality, quality

October 28, 2005 at 7:53 amDude, c’mon!
You can export a ref frame from FCP to LT or Motion. No different than any other of these programs. You gotta think outside the box. Check out my seminar if you want to know the method.Kevin Monahan

I do think outside the box. I also teach at a Master’s level, and have taught FCP, Adobe Premiere Pro, Vegas, After Effects, Combustion, Discreet edit*, Shake and many other NLE and compositing apps. I have edited on 12 different brands of NLE’s, on different platforms and OS’s, from the first Video Toaster to the Avid. In other words, I have quite a bit of experience on how to build titles and title sequences in many different programs. To anyone who has worked with a functional Titler within an NLE, having to export ANY frame from the Timeline before you can see the title over it is a complete waste of time and a hassle. Lebrett had a valid complaint. When you are doing hundreds of titles, every extra “work around” and keystroke counts. As I have said many times before, FCP is awesome in so many ways, but it can always be improved upon. This is one area that is sorely lacking/deficient within FCP.
