    Hi folks,
i’m sure this question might have been asked before, but i thought i’d ask it again, in case things have changed…
does anyone have any thoughts/experience of using USB2.0 hard drives rather than firewire? i’ve been using FW400 for a while now with my powerbook using the internal port for video I/O and a PCMCIA card attached to a FW400 drive, this has worked well.
problem is i’m now putting the 15″powerbook into a 19″ rack case which leaves next to no space for cables plugged into the FW, USB sockets, not to mention the PCMCIA which adds around an inch and a half to the width of the machine. with this in mind i was hoping to use FW400 for video I/O (only DV for the time being, until more film companies ditch 16/35mm and swap to HD) and then use a USB2.0 drive for storage.

does FCP mind USB2.0? any pitfalls to be aware of?

    Thanks

USB cannot be use for video. While it may be fast, it does not have a sustained throughput speed that video requires. It sends data out in bursts, while firewire sends data in more of a steady stream.

    Stick with firewire.

Shane, I have a similar question. I’m currently using a single FW800 drive for DV video capture/render and all graphics and music files as well. I’m considering repurposing my USB2 drive for all the pictures, music, motion projects and AE projects and renders (to save some space, as well as, to make the FW800 drive only for capture/render). Out of all this, the only “stream” would be AE renders and aiff music files. Will the USB2 sustain enough throughput for that?

    Thanks,
    Gary

Should be fine for music, but I’d think not for the AE comps. AE Comps are media files, and need to be on the media drive for best performance.
