  Inaccurate edit to tape with DVCPro50 deck

  Hello,

  Had the deck for more than a year now, but never tried mastering back to DVCPro50 tape. It’s a Panasonic AJ-SD93E PAL deck and has been working flawlessly when loading in material into Final Cut.

  However, when doing edit to tape the deck will not do insert, neither with Firewire or RS-422 (via Keyspan). In assemble (tape has bars/black and TC) the in-point will sometimes be late by 2 frames, sometimes 5,6 or 7 frames. Occasionally the inpoint will be correct, but the first 7 frames are a freeze of the first frame of the programme. Also, over the course of the recording the programme will drift, i.e. points in the show that I know start at certain timecodes will be late by 4 – 5 frames as if the 25fps speed is not maintained.

  Can anyone explain this odd behaviour?

  According to Panasonic’s own web-site, the AJ-SD93 is designed as a player/recorder… not editor. See link:

  It states that “The AJ-SD93 will record the output from a nonlinear editor. Adding optional accessories will not enable insert editing capability. ”

  I take that to mean that it will crash record or Assemble edit only either with 1394 or 422 deck control. I was very dissappointed when I saw this the other day. To get “Editing” capability, you must step up to the $15,000 model.
