FCP questions
Posted by Espnetboy3 on October 18, 2005 at 1:42 amI have a few FCP questions I always wanted to be answered so if anyone can answer just one or all of them please feel free to do so. Thanks.
1.What is nesting exactly and what are the benefits of it?
2.What is pre-composing in AE and or FCP?
3.If I add effects and keyframes to a clip in FCP is there a way to save my effect so I can apply it to other clips, almost like a preset I created?
4.What is an EDL?
Thanks in advance

October 18, 2005 at 3:03 amnesting is when you drop other sequences or comps into another sequence or comp as if they were another layer. This is helpful when you need to keep your comps separate from one another. Great in AE.

October 18, 2005 at 3:26 amedl = edit decision list. for offline editing. capturing and editing video at a lower resolution (for speed) Edit, create cuts. These are stamped as an EDL. Then later delete your low res media, create your EDL. The EDL then interacts with the high res video later on ….

October 18, 2005 at 7:20 am3. There is a nifty little process that you can use to do just this. Highlight the clip with the keyframes you want to transfer. Hit EDIT>COPY (Apple-C). Next highlight the clip you want to add them to, select EDIT>PASTE ATTRIBUTES (Option-V) and in the list that comes up, select Motion or FIlters or whatever things you manupulated in the first clip that you want to transfer to this one.

We had a discussion on this last Summer. It seems that not every filter will let you paste keyframes. Some do, some don’t.

October 18, 2005 at 4:38 pmThanks everyone, im going to have to give this nesting a try. All i do is in my timeline is make a new sequence edit it, then drag it into my browser and then from the browser into my original sequence and it will show up as 1 edited clip correct?

October 18, 2005 at 5:07 pmno need to drag your sequence into you bin window (browser?) i think is what i you meant. It your edited seq will already be there. the rest you have correct. Drag and drop your edited sequences into another seq or in your case the original seq. Then there you have it. It work out great. I mainly use it for compositing but works well with whatever….

October 18, 2005 at 8:34 pmAnother benefit of nesting is to change the order of the render pipeline. Effects are rendered in a certain order that you cannot change unless you leave that effect out of the nest, nest the other items, then apply the effect to the nest.
Nests are great for keeping a lot of layers more manageable, like the elements making up a lower third.
You can make oversized nests to “pan and scan”.
You can nest layers together and then add effects to that nest.
Get my book or take my seminar to get up on all these techniques….

October 18, 2005 at 8:41 pmSedesign- how would you use this for compositing? I created an effect in fcp with the levels filter the blur and a few keyframes to a clip. Instead of having to sit there and recreate this damn effect to another clip later on in my timeline sequence is there a way to save the effect and apply it to a clip down the line?

October 18, 2005 at 8:59 pmnesting is VERY powerful with compositing, I use it everyday in AE. Helps keep the redering down, and allows me to keep everything separate nicely. Also with FCP easy, there are tabs in the filters that you can click+drag and drop onto other clips in the seq. If the particular filter you are dealing with doesnt provide that then just save the settings as a preset and load them into the other clips down the line.
