endless ripple delete
I’m running FCP 4.5 on a dual 1.8 G5 and every time I highlight a clip and hit the backward delete key I get a ripple delete instead. This should only happen when hitting shift + delete, or hitting the forward delete, right? Trashed prefs many times, copied and pasted into new timelines many times. Am I caught in some ripple delete mode that I don’t know about?

The forward delete key will always ripple delete (the one with the little x on it right?). You have it backwards I think.

Yes, there are two delete keys on the keyboard.
The “delete” key to the right of the +/= key will NON-Ripple delete (if you don’t hold down the shift key).
The “del” key with the x inside the arrow (below the “help” key) will always Ripple delete (if that edit is “allowed” by FCP.

Re-programmed (re-mapped) keyboard?

I checked the keyboard mapping and all looks correct. I think I have a buggy project file on my hands.
