  • True 3D spheres and cameras?

Posted by Justin Rank on October 28, 2006 at 5:51 am

After spending the last hour in the archive, I’ve decided to post my question

I’ve got some rust textures that I’ve been using to create some ‘3D’ spheres in AE6.5. I’ve tried the cc sphere, and went as far as trying to create a true 3D sphere that works with AE’s cameras, but it just doesn’t turn out right. After creating the sphere, I turn the 3D switch on and run a camera around the object and it’s still stuck on a 2D layer

Other than the expense of running out and buying and learning something like Lightwave, is there a way to create TRUE 3D spheres in AE?

    Hi
[Justin Rank] “I turn the 3D switch on and run a camera around the object and it’s still stuck on a 2D layer”

you could animate the CC Sphere rotation property instead of using a camera.

I’ve tried using Zaxwerks and I get the same results. I set up a sphere with the ‘use comp camera’ switched on and it looks 2D. I set up a camera to do a 360 degree pan around the sphere and it’s still 2D.

As for just using the XYZ rotate axis on CC Sphere, that doesn’t really do it either since I’ll still need a camera to move into other parts of the comp.

When you DO decide the easier route of using a real 3D program, Maxon may still sell a version of C4D 6 (4 versions back) for less than $100. You won’t need to really “learn” the program. Just hit the sphere primitive button, download a free rust texture or shader and the rest works almost like AE.

If you think you may do a lot of 3D work in the future, I can’t recommend the current C4D 10 enough. Especially with the ‘mograph’ module installed. It’s a whole new world.

Blender, the first 3d program i ever used and totally free initially off putting due to crowded ui but in reality very simple to use (add>mesh>sphere) s for scale g for grab
