Losing 6 lines of video in edit to tape
In the edit to tape mode, somewhere between my timeline and the Master tape, the 6 lines of video with the captions are lost.
It looks fine when I preview it from the timeline, but when I edit to tape, the 6 lines of video dissapear. Any ideas?Jeff Surgeon

What format was your original source material? What timeline settings did you use? What tape format are you mastering to? Without that information anyone wihing to help you would simply be guessing.

I am trying to edit to a Digital S format tape. Even without using the edit to tape mode and simply recording straight from the timeline, the closed captions are still getting lost. If I go to beta, all is well. Is there a chance that Digital S doesn’t support closed caption when I edit to it in the digital mode. Sorry my post was so vague, I am new to editing and posting.

I’m not familiar with Digital S, so this is just an educated guess… The Pixel dimensions of Betacam are 720×486, while DV is 720×480, so there are your 6 lines… So, do a “Save As” and save your current timeline using another name or just add “DV” to the existing seq. name. Then, use Easy Setup to change the timeline to a DV sequence, and render the timeline. That should do the job for you.

Also make sure that your deck is set to record the lines that the CC info is on. On many decks, you have the option of either recording or blanking the lines used for CC information. Check the menu setups on the D-9 deck and see if you might be an option to either pass or blank those particular lines.

Betacam doesn’t have pixels as such, as it’s analogue format, but is normally captured to as, and recorded back as 486 lines. D9 is 720×480, like DV, DV50 (which is what compression it uses, if I remember rightly) so will not record those 6 lines.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I figured it out.
It is all about the setting in the actual machines. The machines figure if there isn’t any closed caption material, it won’t worry about. You have to physically go into each machine and make it put the closed captions on line 21.Jeff
