  • Miglia A/D converter problems with reference monitor

My reference monitor is connected to my G5 through an A/D converter (Miglia Director’s Cut 2) via firewire and S-video. The image frequently ‘digitizes’ (digital ‘blocks’)on the monitor, usually after a few moments of operation. Sometimes the signal disappears completely, leaving me with the ‘pink screen’. After refreshing the device, the signal returns, but so does the problem (again after a moment).

I’ve tried 2 different firewire cables, composite instead of S-video, I’ve sent back the Miglia to the factory (after a week it was returned saying they tested it for days and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it…), I’ve had the shop hook it up to a set in the store itself (no problem but they tested it only for a few minutes)So I went home embarassed thinking it must have been my fault messing up some preset…

I’ve had the problem on my G4 running FCP 4, I now have a G5 running FCP 5- same hassle.

    I capture via a simple DV-camera.

I frequently use an external Lacie disk- sometimes for capture. I tried using only one firewire port to avoid conflicts.

I just used my videocamera as an A/D converter(PD-150) instead of the Miglia to view a 20-minute QT-file and it worked fine for 20 minutes.

I’ve honestly never heard of that product, but since the camera worked just fine, it’s obviously a problem with box.

I always recommend the Canopus ADVC-100. A simple, $300 box and I’ve never seen or heard of that problem with the device.

I’m now using a consumer DV-camera and it plays through fine. I heard of other people using ‘cheap’ cameras for this purpose but how about proper audio.
I use the S-video to connect my camera with the monitor but when I use the mini-jack (splitting into 2 audio-cables) to my amp for the audio, there’s a slight but very unprofessional – and annoying- buzz. (and I lose the stereo sound)
When I opt for the Use Internal Audio to monitor my audio, the audio plays thru the audio-cables and the video thru firewire/s-video and it’s out of sync…

How do others solve this when using a camera to monitor projects?
