External monitor/audio not quite in sync?
Using FCP5. I have a Canopus ADVC100 converter, a Mackie audio mixer and Tannoy speaker and JVC external monitor. I have it all conected up correctly so I can view my timeline on the external JVC monitor, the audio comes from the G5 via FireWire and into my Canopus converter, from there it goes via phono into my Mackie mixer and in turn to my Tannoy speakers.
The picture and sound are about half a second out of sync. Any ideas.

Just noticed, it’s actually out of sync on the Apple monitor in FCP5’s interface too, so ignore all the external stuff, it is an FCP problem.

Okay I know what the problem is, but don’t know hot to fix it. When I go to View/External Video/Off, all is okay on the computer screen i.e. in sync, but no output to external monitor, then when I select View/External Video/All Frames I get external monitor, but it is out of sync on both computer screen and external monitor by half a second or so.

The Canvas Window on the computer is SUPPOSED to be out of sync with the EXTERNAL audio
(there is a delay in the conversion of the FW digital into analog A/V).But with your set-up, the external VIDEO must also be out of sync with the Canvas Window.
Here is how it should be:
A. External Frames OFF: Canvas and Mac audio should be in sync with each other.
B. External Frames ON: EXTERNAL video and audio should be in sync with each other (Canvas should be out of sync with both).Double-check under those conditions and please re-post.

Okay, here is how it is:
A. External Frames Off: canvas and mac are in sync
B. External Frames On: external video and audio are out of sync (canvas is also out of sync). The picture is slightly behind the audio on the external and the canvas. This has just happened since upgrading to FCP5HD suite. With FCP4.5 it was all set up and working fine. I have done nothing, but upgrade. -

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Trashing prefs did not work, still the same. Also repaired permissions, didn’t work either.

You need to adjust your Playback Offset to ensure your external monitor and audio are in sync. For DV I believe the offset is 4 frames though you may need to adjust depending on your setup. For the AJA Io it’s 5 or 7 frames. You should always view and listen to the same source, i.e. if you external monitor is fed by a firewire box, your speakers should be too, but the offset control allows you to modify your audio playback to match your setup.
System Settings > Playback Controls.

Hi Walter.
I don’t see how this applies to this problem.
The audio and video when monitored either BOTH externally or BOTH on the Mac are not affected by this delay setting.It only comes into play if you monitor audio from one place and video from the other, right?
(BTW, my delay setting for use with a small FW deck is 5 frames.)

It only comes into play if you monitor audio from one place and video from the other, right?”Nope, it comes into play with all settings. For instance if I forget to reset my Offset to 0 after trashing my prefs, the output on my Kona 2 is out of sync.

Thanks guys. Walter’s suggestion about the playback offset in the playback controls has sort of helped, but not totally. It was on 4 by default. I set it to 0 and now the sync is perfect on the computer screen with All Frames selected under View/External video, but it is still out of sync by about 5 frames on the external monitor.
Does the Audio/Video settings with the playback output and mirror on desktop etc have anything to do with it, what should they be set to?
