sony hdv camera and hdv deck can’t monitor thru these devices
Does any know how to view through a sony hdv fx1 camera or the hdv deck
I made sure to put veiw on all frames but I Cant get the hdv 1080i option to highlight under video playback
I have a jvc mini dv deck and it will allow me to view my timeline thru the deck. -

So all this talk about how you can edit HDV with firewire is a bit misleading I guess! I’ve seen it said that you can edit HDV with firewire but if you can’t put it BACK to tape with firewire then I’d hardly call that a usable solution. (I guess all these articles are assuming you’d be capturing to some other non-GOP codec like iMovie does?)

You CAN put it back to tape, you just can’t monitor it via firewire!

I’m a little confused, Steve. Shane seemed to be saying that the reason you couldn’t monitor it without a card is because it couldn’t be played back out over firewire. So can you transfer to the camera over firewire or not? And if so, then in what way am I misunderstanding Shane?

You can print to tape, but the timeline needs to be rendered out first, it can’t do all the necessary calculations in real time. HD takes a lot of overhead in the system.

Ok, so you could monitor over firewire when printing to tape, just not when editing.
I was getting worried that you would somehow be printnig the video to tape but monitoring the output from the computer directly, not the deck, which doesn’t do anyone any good! I finally get it now, though. Thanks

HDV cannot be viewed realtime via firewire. You need a capture card.
But it can be output via firewire. The only way to do this is PRINT TO TAPE, and it will need to compute for a while before it is ready to go…converting it from an edirable format to one that can be output to tape.

What they are saying is that you can do a EDIT TO TAPE or PRINT TO VIDEO thru firewire with the sony HDR deck and camera but you cannot use the camera or deck to just monitor what you have in your timeline thru firewire. I’ve talked to several mac genious who do not have an answer as to why.
