  FCP TO AVID using a EDL. The horror. The pain. please help

  I’ve just finished my offline edit for a 1/12 hour documentary, which i did on my FCP 5. The show is in HD so i need to online at a post house using a Avid DS. I created a basic timeline, video only (the audio has already been finished) , just basic cuts and dissolves, which i turned into an EDL. As a test i took that edl over and tried to import it into our Avid ver 12.
  However the Avid refused to import either a GVG 4 or a CMX 3600 EDL, and I can’t figure out what’s going on. I’ve tried several different Edl formats and it refuses to read any of them. Has anyone else run into this problem before? Any suggestions?

  Make sure you only have one video track. Also make sure your reel names conform to the EDL standard….

  I just did several tests. 3 clips, laid back to back video only. Exported it as an CMX3600 edl V1 only.
  The avid wouldn’t recognize it, even with shortened reel names.

  Will the Avid import an EDL created from itself? Just to determine whether the problem is with settings on the Avid EDL Manager.

  EDLs have never been that great with FCP, but with simple sequences I have always gotten it to work.

  I tried the same basic 3 cut edl on an avid and a avid express. both refused to import the file.
  I would understand if it imported and the individual shots were screwy, but it won’t even import the file.
  I did manage to import a ALE batch capture list made in the avid back into the avid, so i’m assuming the
  edl importer works fine.

  problem solved. A corrupt edl manager on the avid was to blame. And apparently the Avid Express does not have a EDL manager. thanks for trying!

  You can also look at using Automatic Duck to make the process much easier. We’re doing that now with an AVID OMF coming to me to conform a series to HD and I simply open it using the Automatic Duck Pro Import. It opens up as a regular FCP project. MUCH easier than dealing with EDL’s.
