How do I get the playhead to snap to the zoom tool?
If I zoom in on the timeline without selecting a clip, how do I get the zoom to snap to the playhead?

You answered your own question.
If you DON’T have a clip selected (highlighted), then the zoom will change at the point at which the cursor is sitting.
If you DO have a clip selected (even if its not seen in the Timecode window) the zoom will enlarge centered on that clip.

Not understanding you.
Can you please clarify? Are you stating that you can’t have the zoom snap to the playhead?

So, as long as you do NOT have any clip(s) selected (highlighted, by touching them with the cursor) on the timeline, if you hit the ZOOM key (Apple +) the timeline will expand, centered on the cursor (“playhead”).
If the zoom “jumps” to another area on the timeline, it means that you already had a clip “selected”.
You can “de-select” any selected clip(s) by hitting Shift-Cmd-A (think of it as UN-“select all”).
Its easy to try this out.
