    Moo,

I have some stupid questions about HD gear …The Company I work for wants to prepare for future HD video projects. I’ve been editing with Final Cut Pro (which I know supports HD). I don’t really have any experience working on HD equipment though (other than my HD TV at home, it’s real nice).

I don’t have a clue about what kind of tape is typically used, or if there’s a standard, what kind of playback deck will I need, etc. I generally just capture and edit stuff that client supplies us with so … what should I consider purchasing? What would a typical HD production be shot on? Tape Wise.

    -Thanks in advance, Jess

There are lots of different flavors of HD.
    HDCam
    DVCPro HD
    Uncompressed
    even HDV

Depends on what you want to do.
In my case, I would probably go with DVCPro because of the lower cost and high quality.

[Kevin Monahan] “There are lots of different flavors of HD.

And don’t forget about all the different frame rates, progressive vs. interlaced, etc., etc…… HD is not as easy as just switching over from SD.

I don’t consider HDV a real HD format as it’s so heavily compressed I would rather shoot with a DVX-100A (DV) and then upconvert that to HD later. DVCPro HD is very very popular because of high quality at a lower price point than HDCAM. Generally, all mastering is delivered on HDCAM or D5 so you’ll want a system that can output to either or use a larger post house to master your HD shows.

As Kevin says, what type of HD will determine the gear you get. The AJA Kona LH and Kona 2 are two outstanding HD cards which allow you to output to pretty much anything.
