Excuse me if my terminology is off a bit as I explain my problem.

Something has happenned to make FCP ask me to render every clip I drag from the browser into the timeline. Every time, that little red line appears. This is now only my second project using FCP, and my other project didn’t have this issue. Thanks in advance for lending me your brains.

Make sure your sequence settings are the same as the media you’re dragging into it. e.g if your media is NTSC DV then make sure your sequence reflects the same setting. Otherwise FCP has to re-write a new file in the different codec.

I’ve shot all the footage using a dvx100 in standard 24p mode, not advanced mode. Can you suggest what my settings should be? Should I be using 2332 pulldown mode?

    Kevin,

Here’s a link to an article by Graeme Nattress that was tailor made just for you:

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/24p_in_FCP_nattress.html

Graeme is actually around here today so if you have any further questions after reading his article he may very well respond to you soon after.

Thanks for that article. Perfect. However, just to clarify. I used normal 24p when shooting on my dvx100. Then, I should just use the normal, NTSC dv settings, and I should be good to go, correct??

Sequence settings should be DV NTSC 23:98 so FCP can add the pulldown on the fly over firewire, allowing you to see your sequence playing on a standard NTSC monitor. You can choose from various pulldown patterns in the audio/video settings which will determine the quality of the video as it plays over firewire and out to the monitor. The speed of your particular computer setup will determine what pulldown pattern you choose. Make sure you’ve selected video playback to use high quality, otherwise you won’t be able to access the different pulldown patterns for playback.

Thanks Don. Will I need to render all the clips still when I drag them into the timeline?

Sorry. What about capture settings? Any thoughts there? Thanks again.

You are correct. If you shot 24p Normal, you DO NOT need to remove pulldown. You will be capturing and editing at 29.97 NTSC. Use the DV easy set up and you’ll be good to go.

Your clips should go into the DV timeline (make sure to make a new sequence after you choose the dv easy set up) and should play without rendering.
