FCP5 on a g5 dual 2 ghz 2.5 gigs ram, no external hd monitor.

We shot 24p Varicam footage and some overcranked to 48fps. I am working with a post house that captured footage on a firewire 400 drive for me. I showed them Andrew Balis’s article on the Ken Stone site. I am interested in following that workflow. They tried to capture the footage per his suggestion for a 23.98 timeline so that I could use a 720p 24 easy setup. Trouble is they could not get the video rate to capture at 24 (23.98). When I look at the video rate in the browser it shows it at 59.94. They subrented a 1200a deck to do the capturing and I’m wondering if something was missed? They are telling me to work with a 720p 60 easy setup instead of 720p 24 because the video rate is 59.94. Is this OK? They say it can convert to 24p after the edit. How will this affect the offspeed footage, transitions titles etc.?

Did you capture using the ADVANCED PULLDOWN REMOVAL option? THAT is how you get your footage to 23.98.

    Shane:
The Andrew Balis workflow article says to check the advanced pulldown removal box so I’m assuming that they tried.

Is it ok to work 720p60 and do the pulldown later?

I assume nothing. Just double checking because often I forget the simpliest things.

From what I know, if your footage is 24p then it is best to capture with the Advanced Pulldown Removal from the start. For Reverse Telecining afterwards won’t realy do it as it is a different cadence than APR.

And if you shot 720p60, you really shouldn’t do the pulldown, as you shot 60i, not 24p. Although the Film Effects filters from nattress.com now come into play and can do wonders.

[Shane Ross] “I assume nothing. Just double checking because often I forget the simpliest things.”

I will check with them… but today they told me it would be best to do the pulldown later anyway.

We had a pro DIT on the shoot he has assured me that we have 24p…I did double check with him though!

Bummer…they will need to recapture everything? Is there something I can do to change the 59.94 to 23.98 without recapturing or is that a compromise that will impact quality?

I’m sure you’ve heard the old Russian Proverb: TRUST…then verify!

    Thanks for the helpin’ hand!

I would like to let others weigh in on this. I am not 100% about the pulldown removal later. Just what I was told from a few people. GOOD people, but let’s hear others thoughts.

    Shane:

I appreciate your help…I am hoping for other opinions but looks like I better recapture.
