External hard drive
Hello,
What is the best external hard drive to get for capturing / video editing? I’m looking at Lacie firewire drives (LaCie 300gb Extreme Triple Interface Firewire 800/400/USB, specifically) but I remember hearing something about using a SATA or PCI hard drive for video editing (LaCie 250gb 7200RPM SATA D2 Drive with PCI interface). Any opinions or facts on that?
Also, what is a good calculation for determinig how much video footage, time wise, a gig can hold? I’ve heard 5 minutes of video is about a gig, is that fairly accurate? So a 250gb HD can hold 1000-1250 minutes of captured video?

SATA is faster than FW800. Pretty much the same price. For me, it’s a no brainer.
You’ll get 5 min per gig with DV video. Uncompressed is about a minute per gig and 10 bit uncompressed even less.

For broadcast work. For any project where you would want to have the highest quality graphics.

Such a bizarre question. Wouldn’t a better question be… “Why would you use compressed video?” To which the answer used to be “because we couldn’t use uncompressed, the machines are too slow and the drive space would be too expensive.”
Jared, the simple answer is it looks better. Why do you shoot DV instead of VHS?
