    Hello,

I am thinking of getting either a new 2.0 power mac or try to find a new 2.5. My question is how much faster would a 2.5 be for running apps from Final Cut Studio? Will renders in Final Cut or encoding MPEG-2 files be much faster? Is the extra money spent on the 2.5 system worth the exra money spent?

    Thanks,

    John

    Well,
I don’t know any exact figure, but you will find an increase in rendering/mpeg encoding speed with a DP2.5 vs a DP2.0GHz. Theoretically you have a 25% increase in processor AND bus speed.

It is unlikely you will see a full 25% increase in speed, but things will go faster. We have a DP2.0 and a DP2.7 and their is a noticable difference, especially in RT capabilities and Livetype.

Also, weigh in the fact that you could buy additional RAM, a second display, more storage space, etc. These options might make the DP2.0 a better option. A DP2.0 with a healthy amount of RAM would likely be faster than a 2.5 with just enough RAM.

    Hope this helps,

I’d really have to know what the price difference was to make that call. Also, compare ALL the differences between the two machines you’re looking at. I don’t know which ones you’re examining, but for example, the RAM installed, empty RAM spots (either 4 or 8), video card, hard drive sizes, and optical drives could all be different between the two models. So even if one is (for example) $500 more than the other, that price difference is going to more than just the processor. Judge ALL of it.

To answer your question, yes the 2.5 would be a bit faster. I’d spend a few hundred dollars more to get it, but not $1,000, I guess. But I’m just guessing. Show us what systems you’re looking at. There is no 2.5 machine for sale by Apple anymore so I assume you’re looking at a 3rd party retailer or a used machine? Send us links and we can give you better help.

    Thanks for the quick answers.

The dual 2.0 is the same one offered on the Apple Store. Dual 2GHz, 1GHz frontside, 512MB expandable to 4GB (upgraded to 2GB from Apple), 16x double layer Superdrive, ATI Radon 9600 256meg upgraded, Apple Care.

$2358 with an free ipod mini (educational discount)

The dual 2.5 is same one offered a generation before. Dual 2.5GHz, 1.25GHz frontside, 512MB Upgraded to 1.5GB (1GB special at MacMall for $40), 8x Superdrive, ATI Radon 9600XT 128 megs, Apple Care.

trying for $2529 (trying to get system for $2199, this what it was being sold for at our Compusa, but I was to late)

There still are some 2.5s out there from different companies that I might be able to try to get a better price. Just wondering if it is worth it or should I just get the 2.0 from Apple.

You want to go with a G5 that has the capacity for 8 gigs of ram not 4. They are different mother boards and our 1.8 dual G5 (4 gig’s of ram) is much slower and has been more problematic then our both our G5 dual 2 gig’s we have.
