I posted this last night with a bad title……..so lets try it with that as a title

I am trying to do a quick multiclip edit and everything is in place except for the fact that on my RT drop down menu on my timeline I have no option to select for multiclip playback. All it says is ” Play base layer only, use playback seetings, or full quality. I did select multiclip playback in my sequence settings menu but still no luck. Right now I have my multiclip in my timeline, double clicked it so it goes into the viewer. I see all angles and the top left angle is selected. As soon as I hit play it comes to whatevr clip i have selceted. This happens even though I have open selected in my viewer and no matter if I play it from the viewer or the timeline..it always goes from my six angles to one as soon as i hit play. When I stop it from playing it goes back to showing me all the angles. My clips are HDV and I am editing on my g4 powerbook.

thanks for the help guys..im going nuts trying to research this stupid problem, im sure im one check mark away from it working.

Ill just reply to myself…maybe it is because of the speed of your firewire drive? Maybe you can’t play 6 streams of HDV from a firewire drive….But isn’t there a way to compress the streams real time? Who knows maybe someone will hook me up with some info.

    thanks

    no prob

It sounds like you want to SEE all angles rolling simultaneously, right? If that’s what you’re asking, look at the controls right above the viewer and canvass box. The center icon reveals three choices: sync off, gang and open. If you want them to “roll in sync” you must choose either open or gang. It also doesn’t hurt to RTFM!

It says open already…and what the hell is RTFM?

    read the “frickin'” manual

“RTFM” but don’t be afraid to ask.

Sometimes the manual isn’t all that helpful. The step-by-step sequence for multiclip editing in the thick-and-heavy FCP manual misses the mark by giving a gross overview followed by a disorganized presentation of details.

In the case of multiclip editing, I had to rewrite my own procedure list so that others could digest it easily and get started right away. For example, my own list covers all the basics in setting up clips and getting the procedure to work. There are other options not touched by my list but for what we need to do, it gets the user on his way quickly.

The FCP manual is often written in a narrative manner that makes something as simple as setting up a basic configuration impossible without deep study of all the material. You also end up having to discern details based on experience and experimentation.

For someone interested in just getting something going, a basic checklist goes a long way. Details of settings can come later if further explanations or other options are needed.

So where can I read this manual that you speak of?

[ryanservant] ” So where can I read this manual that you speak of?”

The FCP manual is in the box. Weighs about 10 pounds. Can’t miss it, really. You can also access the same info via FCP’s “help” menu.

    Hi All,

I am not lazy at all, usually I read first the documentation&help …
after reading FCP 5 Users’s Manual about *multiclips*, I am close to “going jump”
I’d prefer to ask you *please” someone *gifted* could explain
how it works this multiclip editing in practice?

    🙂

    Here’s a very basic overview.

    — Select clips for each camera angle.
    — Find “slate” points and cut the clips there.
    — Move clips to a bin. You can create a bin specifically for these clips if it makes it easier to organize.
    — Highlight clips.
    — Go to Modify dropdown menu and select Make Multiclip
    — Select “Sync using in points”.
    — Check “on” all clips.

Your multiclip will then be created and can be found in the bin.

Drag this multiclip into a sequence.

    — In Viewer: Show Multiclip Overlays; Show Source Angle Effects should both be “on.”
    — Go to View dropdown menu — Playhead sync — Open
    — Go to View dropdown menu — Multiclip Active Tracks — Video + Audio
    — Go to View dropdown menu — External Video — All frames (not sure if this is essential)

When you click on your sequence and hit the space bar, you should see all camera angles in the viewer playing simultaneously and the “program” or selected camera angle should be playing in the canvas as well.

To select a camera, just click on the angle in the viewer.

At the end your multiclip will be cut into their respective camera angles. You can go back and fine tune the cuts, too.

This is as far as I got. It’s enough to get started, tho.

    Hi Dean and All,

Thank you Dean, I did it, and now it works very well 🙂
I did an editing of a multiclip with 3 cameras,
with this method I am happy because it goes quickly and more efficiently,
