I have a problem with the connection between the G4 and the camera in FCP.

Fast solution:
Do not use “Print to Video” (PtV).
Just hit record on your camcorder and PLAY the timeline.
As long as you have rendered everything at full quality and performed a Mixdown on your audio (see below) the quality will be identical to PtV.—————————-
Audio Mixdown:There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.
You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs or freezes.
NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.
First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.
It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.
NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

The problem is that when you say “hit the record burtton”, i have a problem because there is no such thing
as a record button on my camera in VCR (player) mode. Only play, ff, rew and pause.
There is a capture button on the camera for filming in camera mode , but in camera mode nothing happens.
I wonder why it is that when playing the timeline i see the movie on the camera lcd display, but there is no
such way as to tell the device to start the tape. -
Many small camcorders do not have a record button (for VCR mode) on the camcorder itself, but DO offer that feature on an optional remote control.
I have never once heard of the odd behavior of FCP writing files to HD instead of the camcorder during PtV.
Did you Trash the FCP Preferences?
