    Hey All,

I’m about to buy some new gear, including a Decklink or Digital Voodoo for Uncompressed SD, and I’ve hit a brick wall when it comes to Hard Drives. They want to sell me a SCSI Media Vault (around $AUD6K for 600Gb), but I’ve heard that I might get away with a Firewire 800 RAID (around $AUD2K for 1TB).

Will the FW800 RAID do the job? I’m not fazed by realtime loss by going to a slower drive. The extra storage space and the price is an acceptable compromise for me. It will also help me go with the DigiVoodoo rather than the Decklink, which I’ve been told is a much sexier product…

    What do you all think?

Firat off, stay away from SCSI for a new system. Fibre Channel is really the way to go for high volume storage with high stability.

FW800 will work just fine for 8bit uncompressed. It barely works for 10bit. I run both the G-TECH G-RAID’s and the LaCie Big Disk Extremes. Both work just fine for 8bit and both have cut dozens of projects with our Aurora PipePro and now the Kona 2 systems.

    Enzo,

I agree with Walter, but you should also look at external SATA RAIDS. BTW didn’t Digital Voodoo become Cinewave which is now dead?

The Voodoo is still alive https://www.digitalvoodoo.net/news/latestnews/

Blackmagic writes the codecs and drivers for both cards just like the original Kona products.

I would agree with the Idea od fiber to high proformance HD needs or Sata external for cost effectiveness.

I don’t know if your using a G4 or G5 but we are using one of each, both with dual processors. The G4 has a Cinewave card and the G5 has a Black Magic Decklink Extreme. Both systems have additional FW800 boards installed allowing us to configure 2 G-Tech 500gb G-Raids into a single 1tb raid. I have no problems with uncompressed bit and 10 bit SD video. Prior to the FW800 drives we used Medea SCSI Raids. The FW800’s cut the cost by over 50% and tripled the storage without any noticeable decrease in performance.

    Hi,

I suggest SATA. Look here for more information:

I did a Projekt withe the la cie bigger disk raid on 800 FW on DVCPro codec. Everything wnet smooth. You need the SCSI or optical fibre for 10 bit uncompressed or HD. As long you just be on DV up to DVCPRO 50, the raid with FW 800 is fine.
