This is very, very, very bad.

I have a 118MB project file of my feature length documentary that won’t open.
It loads to about 15% then I get a General Error!

    I’m running FCPHD on a G5 2.0 with 2.5MB of RAM.
My start-up disk has over 20% free space and my media is on a LACIE FW800 (500GB) with around 15% free space.

I’m up against a CRAZY deadline. Please help.

    Trash your preferences.

Ok, I trashed the prefs, freed up a lot of HD space and, thank G-d, I’ve got my project back.
    Thanks for all the help.

Cool. Now back up (duplicate) that project right now. And send it to a CD-R, firewire drive, a lock box, anywhere. That way your panic level will stay down if this happens again.

    Commence duplication.

I already have – thanks – but I had already backed thhe project up to Flash and onto another FW before the problem occured – but the strange thing was that NONE of the files would open – NOT EVEN my many autosave files (I auto-save every 8 minutes) – weird.

That’s because the preferences were corrupt. you can also back these up with a little application called fcp rescue (it’s free). that way if the general error happens again, run fcp resuce to restore a working set of preferences.
