  Problem matching capture & timeline settings for instructional videos

  Hello,
  I’m using screen-recording software (Snapz Pro) to create an instructional video and then FCP to edit the captured .mov file. I have 2 questions. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated:

  QUESTION 1:
  Seems no matter what Quicktime codec and settings I use to capture with Snapz, the file always requires rendering, even when importing into FCP with identical timeline settings. Is this a limitation of FCP 3, or am I doing something wrong?

  Snapz/QT Capture settings:
  Video:
  – Sorensen Video 3
  – 15 fps
  – Keyframe every – 500 frames
  – Quality – Medium

  Audio:
  – IMA: 4:1
  – 22kHz, mono, 16-bit

  —————-
  FCP Timeline Preset settings:
  – Framesize: Custom (739×513)
  – Pix aspect: Square
  – Field dominance: Unknown (not set)
  – Editing timebase: 15

  QT Video settings:
  – Compressor: Sorensen Video 3
  – Quality: 50%

  QT Audio settings:
  – Rate: 22.050
  – Compressor: None (no options to chose from)
  – Size: 16-bit
  – Use: Mono

  One peculiar thing I notice is when I check the clip’s Item Properties from the FCP browser, FCP shows the video rate as 10 fps, although as I mention above, I set it to 15 fps when capturing?!

  QUESTION 2:
  After editing and rendering the videos, I export as a Quicktime Movie and get nothing but a blank white screen for the duration of the video. FYI, I’ve confirmed that Range Check is off. I would list all of the Export Settings, but it seems to happen regardless of the settings I select. I can however export as a self-contained FCP Movie without a problem.

  I’ll bet that “Medium” in SnapZ doesn’t equal 50%… might try a different codec that you KNOW you can match exactly in FCP…
