  • Can I upgrade old g4 processor and use FCP5?

I have a 450 mhz G4 available to me which has plenty of ram. But I would like to use it with FCP 5 and the specs for the software says I need a faster processor. Has anyone had any experience with an upgrade processor board? I am looking at the 933mhz Mercury extreme board sold by Other World Computing($200). Will this work for me? And will it give me any realtime effects? One more thing, they also have a 1.4 gig version. Is that worth the extra $200 ($400 total)? Any help would be appreciated, because I would hate to spend the money and have it not work for me.

Your computer is worth maybe $500 on ebay. Then you’re going to spend $400 to get to a 1.4 ghz processor. And the whole thing is still a G4. So essentially your investment values $900. Half the price of a G5, which is more than twice as good, can run motion (G4 can’t without upgrading graphics card -another $200), and is just a better deal all around.

Don’t fall for the cheap fix cycle. It’ll burn you. Put that $900 toward a new G5. Upgrading computer components is an idea that is quickly dying off for the mac. The technology (bluetooth, ram, hard drive capacity, DVD burners, airport extreme, video cards, etc.) is growing so fast that it’s a much better deal to almost always go for the complete package.
