  • FCP 5 and PCI graphics card?

Posted by Jean Deraps on July 20, 2005 at 3:48 am

Hi all, I have an old G4 dual 500 that I’d like to install FCP 5 on (don’t ask me why!). I’ve read the requirements and they mention that an “AGP Quartz Extreme graphics card” is required. I would like to install an ATI Radeon 9200 Mac PCI card so that I can swap it into a G5 in the future. Does anyone have any idea whether this would also work? Is anyone using a PCI graphics card successfully with FCP 5?

    Thanks

PCI graphics cards aren’t as fast as the AGP variety so I’d suggest you don’t do this. It’s sort of throwing good money after bad. You’d be MUCH better off selling the G4, and looking for a used G5 with an appropriate Graphics card in it.

I’m pretty sure that FCP 5 won’t open up on a system without an AGP card. I seem to remember that happening with some people trying to install FCP 4x on systems that didn’t have AGP cards couldn’t run it. I suspect that the installer might not even allow you to install it, I think it runs a hardware check first.

Yup.. i’ve installed FCP 5 and it works fine with PCI. The only thing is that it wont support HD output. My G5 has been upgraded to the fullest and im so frustrated when AE CS4 and FCP7 can only be installed using intel.

    cheers
