Aja Kona TV
Has anyone had any success using the Aja Kona TV utility? This free utility sounds like it would really be a nice little thing to have, but when I open a quicktime with it, it does not display on the Broadcast monitor like it is supposed to (I thought)…and if I drag it over into the broadcast, it is still only half rez (which I could do with QT anyhow). Any help would be appreciated…I am sick of animators always sending me movies for inspection on the Broadcast Monitor and having to start a new FCP project or import them into a current one.

this requires AJA hardware. The output of your Kona 2 OR IO should be set correctly for type of content ( 24p, 60i) and when you play the video should play out of your hardware correctly. It does not work with DV or other boards.gary adcock

I have a Kona card (not Kona 2) and the Quicktimes are 720×486 Blackmagic 10bit.

Only works with Apple Native QT formats and the supplied AJA codecs, it does not work with the the BMD drivers. I have been able to use it on my older Kona HD board but I am running only AJA drivers.

I thought that Aja only took care of the hardware and used BMD codecs. Or is this no longer the case?thanks,

Nope, AJA does everything now.

How do the Aja codecs compare to the BMD codecs? This is kind of a bummer, seeing that our whole company pretty much renders out BMD 10bit, and it would be a real pain to get everyone to switch over. I guess, Kona TV was not meant to be for me. Unless, you guys think that there is an advantage to the Kona codecs.

I don’t use BMD codecs, but the AJA codecs are outstanding. They also use the Apple codecs for some things as well.

Interesting. Walter, I was wondering how long ago Aja changed over from BMD codecs. Did they do it with the Kona 2? You were not using Aja products before they switched? Also, I have always wondered about the Apple 10bit uncompressed codec…seeing that pretty much every third party card has it’s own codecs. You said that the Kona sometimes uses the Apple codec; when does it use that, and why does it use it instead of their own?
So many questions. Sorry.

Does AJA make a PC codec? I’ve been rendering in the Blackmagic 10 bit for a long time and playing it back realtime via the IO. Are you saying these won’t play back through the Kona 2?

yes aja makes pc versions of their HD board it is called Xena and is sold as an OEM product to companies such as Boxx and RAVE. The PC codecs are on the AJA web site.
Joe re-read the post and you see that Eli is using a kona SD board with BMD drivers- a solution not recommended by AJA, and we were talking about the Kona TV app NOT the Kona 2 board.
The Kona TV app only plays native QT and or AJA codec files- it was not built to playout other 3rd party files – it does not play Mpeg 2 files for example. (but does play H.264)hope this helps
