  • What’s with Compressor?

I just completed my first project since the new Compressor update, and it looks like crap. I’ve always been happy with the results from Compressor encodes in the past, and I have changed nothing as far as I do my settings. This latest project was about 1:50, and I used VBR at 5 mbs avg. and 6 mbs maximum bit rate. I exported a Quicktime reference movie and brought that into Compressor for the encode. The transitions look particularly awful, but pans also break up, and scenes with lots of detail flicker. You get the idea. Is there another alternative? Can I go back to version 1, and still keep FCP 5 & DVDSP 4? Will I get better results using DVDSP for the encoding?. How about using CBR instaed?

Did you set the motion estimation to best? If not, try that…

Yes. That’s the default. I just tried CBR, and it looks ok, at least in the viewer. I won’t know for sure until I look at it on NTSC. But, what’s wrong with VBR? Is it just me?

Check your field dominance. The wrong setting can produce effects like you’re seeing. I’m still using Compressor 1.2.1, but I seem to remember that I had flickering until I changed the encoder setting to lower instead of automatically detect. For some reason it didn’t pick the correct setting on auto. I’m not in front of my computer, but I think those were the choices.

Thanks John, but that’s not it.

I burned the DVD, and the CBR version looks much better, but still not what I am used to seeing. Still some problems with pans. Dissolves look much better. I’m re-encoding with VBR, just in case it was some kind of fluke.

I was having exactly the same problem. Changing to “bottom field” from auto cleaned it right up.
