capture now freeze, log and capture fine
Dual G4 1GHZ MDD, Internal ATA, External Lacie FW, DSR-11 FCP 4.5 OS 10.3.9 QT 7
This is a new one, I’m trying to “capture now” some DV to my extra ATA internal drive. When I press capture now, it captures 1 frame and freezes for a few minutes, then says I have dropped frame clip. The resulting clip is 1 frame. If I capture it to an old LaCie external FW drive, it’s just fine. Either drive works if I log the in/out and capture.
I’ve tried limiting the capture now to 5 and 10 minutes and turning it off. No change. I’m delted prefs and even reformatted the destination ATA (NOT journaled BTW). No change. Repaired permissions, all that.
I can capture to the FW and transfer to the internal ATA but that’s not much of a workaround.
I checked the previous posts, but couldn’t find something this specific. Anyone?

To add to the confusion, it seems that I can “capture now” fine to the system drive! Any bets on whether I’m losing an internal ATA? Plays back fine, but I can’t seem to write to it unless I mark in/out.

How full is the drive? What make & model? Have you checked it’s directories with Disk Warrior?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I even reformatted it nice and clean. Unjournaled of course.
Before that I did all the regular stuff too. Disk Warrior, permissions, repair, etc. All clean.

Well, that’s odd, to say the least. What brand of drive? Maxtor, perhaps? I favor Hitachi & Seagate, myself.

Never been a fan of Maxtor. The 1st I ever heard of them was when I worked at B&H. They were one of the only manufacturers of Type 3 PCMCIA hard drive cards that newspapers were using in their digital cameras at the time. I think the drives were something like 128MB-512MB. It seemed like nearly all the Maxtors came back as defective.
Then the industry moved away from those kind of cards to Compact Flash, & IBM (later Hitachi) started making “Micro Drive” cards on a CF card. Much more reliable. Even with an adapter to the older cameras.
Now, of course, a 1GB solid state card is hovering at around $100 on sale.

I really doubt if this a brand issue. I’ve seen every drive brand fail. I have seen every brand last well beyond warranty (I still have a 75GB 5 platter from IBM’s Hungary plant – notorious for failure). I have seen bad “lots” of drives from almost every manufacturer. The biggest upgrade in reliability I have seen is fluid dynamic bearings. That being said, if you hear weird noises coming from the drive (loud/repetative clicks/cycles of clicks), it’s a dead man walking.
Try this:
When you reformatted, I assume you picked HFS+ without journaling (although I have had no issues with journalled drives myself). You may want to set it to write all zeros – takes longer, but should map out all bad sectors.
You may want to set partitions to something other than 1 partition, then repartition back to 1 partition (assuming you want 1 partition).
This may just be some voodoo, but something feels good about knowing a new partition map has been written. I have still never gotten a clear answer if reformatting does this if you are using the same partition.Ok, if that didn’t work, try switching some of your HD slave/master jumpers around.
Try making both drives cable select.
Try making system drive master and secondary drive slave.BTW – you do have the secondary drive on the same cable as your system, right? If it is connected in line with the Optical, you will have problems generally. If it is connected to a PCI-ATA card, I would update that cards firmware. If that doesn’t help, connect it to the system drive.

Do you have Norton System Works or Virex installed?
If yes, get rid of it! I had the same problem and as soon as I uninstalled Norton I was able to do Capture Now to external drives again.
