  FCP and Sony Z1 HDV compatible?

  Can I use the Sony HDV Z1 with Final Cut Pro HD?

  The short answer is No.. but you could use it with FCP 5.

  Thanks Jerry. Will it work natively with FCP5 then, or do you still need something else? I didn’t know if Apple had native support for HDV yet?

  FCP5 is fully compatible and supports HDV format with no obvious problems.
  We have Z1 for some time now and FCP studio which came about a week ago and everything works fine with not much rendering and/or problems.

  Just a note, if you can, use a G5 HDV seems very sluggish on my G4 1Ghz. Especially if you use filters.

  I have a question for you since you have a Z1. I have to use one with other cameras (a DVX100A and a JVC DV5000) this weekend in a test situation. It’s unavoidable and I need to formulate a plan for using the cameras together. I was thinking of using the Z1 just straight DV – 4:3, instead of trying to do the HDV thing with the other formats. I really like shooting 23.98 (24p) with the DVX, but am uncertain about the workflow if I incorporate this workflow to include the Sony and JVC. Any ideas, or have you dealt with something like this before and can recommend a direction? It’s a live concert environment.

  Well, the only question is which is your final format? Is it SD or HD? As far as I can see it is NTSC, right?
  If you plan to do all in DV then use DV on Z1 also. But we tested all three modes of Z1 and found that DVcam mode is superior (at least for some stuff we shoot and finalize everyday) as it requires a bit less postprocessing then DV mode. Maybe it is not a bad idea for you too. Try to shoot something in DV and DVcam and compare it.

  Thanks. I will follow this advice. I can capture DVCAM directly from the Z1 if I’m noy mistaken.
