  • Striping FW-800 Drives as 1 RAID

Posted by John Dehn on July 7, 2005 at 12:18 am

Does anyone have experience in using Apple Disc Utility to stripe 2 FW-800 Drives as a single RAID in the quest for greater thru-put. I have a G4, 1.25, with 2 G-RAID 500s, and 2 Adaptec FW-800 PCI cards and an Aurora Igniter RT. Striping went without a hitch, playback in FCP looks okay, but playback through the Aurora stutters and is interspersed with black frames. Since it looks okay in the quicktime viewer, I’m starting to wonder about a conflict with the Aurora card.

    Any thoughts would be great!

    Thanks.

I’m running several striped pairs of Lacie 250Gb Firewire 800 drives thru an Aja La without any problems at all. I’m controlling them by Lacie FW-800 PCI cards running in a Dual G4 1Ghz. The G4 is running OS 10.3.8 with FCP 4.5. Solid as a rock. I’m giving each drive it’s own port on the cards. None of the drives are daisy chained. It works well up to 8-bit uncompressed. I’ve not tried it with 10 bit, however.
I’m just putting the finishing touches on a Dual 2.3 Ghz with the same setup running Tiger with FCP 5. I’ll see how that combination works in a couple of days.

As far as I know the fw 800 is still screwed up. I was running some test the other day and the read or write was much slower I can’t remember which but one is much slower. It is the apple operating system from what I understand.

    John,

I have a very similar setup to Tom’s, except that I use the Blackmagic SP card and OS 10.3.9. Additionally I have put more than one drive on each Lacie firewire 800 card. My setup has been very reliable also.
