There’s a great tutorial that comes with Final Cut Pro. It would be very wise for you to run this so you can learn how the interface works. You simply de-select the video and audio tracks which is explained nicely in the tutorial.

Walter’s advice is good. I work as a adjunct faculty at a film school, and a lot of students have taught themselves Final Cut.

However, many times they are unaware of some basic features, such as the use of contextual menus or the tool pallette.

A great way to go is to play with the program for a while, and then use the tutorial, and then skim the user manual, but completely study the table of contents. That way, when you want to do something new, you will remember that the feature was mentioned in the table of contents, and you can read the detail at that time.

A small amount of study will pay off in a much greater understanding of the program. Walter could have spelled out the answer specifically, but he’s doing you a huge favor by suggesting the tutorial.

thanks for the hints. i’m an editor coming to final cut fresh.
i’m stepping into an existing workflow. generally, i’ve been
able to make things work well. there have been some instances,
however, like this one, in which i could use some specific help.

being that i’m on someone else’s system, i’m not sure where to
find the tutorial, or even if it’s loaded. i also haven’t had
time to do anything but edit. been doing four hour stints on
a four camera shoot. i’ve gotten this to work fine but on
occassion need help. in surfing the manual i find it often
takes more time than i have in a four hour session to locate
information i need. this is often due to a lack of familiarity
with final cut terminology. if i don’t search the right keyword
i don’t return the right links. either that or i return too many
links to efficiently browse before i have to leave the workstation.
these are the kinds of instances in which i’m posting in hopes of
a quick tip from experienced users.

i took over this project from an editor who teaches final cut.
apparently he told the filmmakers that the multicam setup i
proposed was not possible in fcp. i was able to walk the filmmaker
through the setup process over the phone without ever having sat
down at a fcp station: ‘look for this kind of menu. what’s it say?
now look for that kind of menu. what’s it say.’ once set up i was
able to perform the first cut of this four cam feature in a week.
i say this not to boast but just as an indication that i’m not
frivolously posting but am already fairly capable and am simply
looking for a quick tip to keep me moving.

is the tutorial loaded with the app or is it more likely to be on
a cd. no idea where the cd’s are for this system. i’m usually
there alone. where would i look for it? on a fcp menu? i’ll play
with it next time i’m there. also, i’m familiar with right-click
contextual menus but with the single-button mouse on this system
    find things a bit cumbersome.

    thanks for any help,
    BabaG
