I have made a gunsite graphic for a hunting show we are editing which is shot with the Panasonic Varicam at 60p. We are formating our graphic as 1280X720 but when we import it the graphic is oval instead of round. Since DVCpro is square pixels there should be no size correction that is sometimes req’d. with SD video (photoshop 7) .Does anyone know what we are doing wrong? Stu

DVCPROHD is really 960 x 720 in size. The magic of the low data rate is the smaller frame size.

Yep, then FCP stretches the video back out to 1280 on output so your circle will be oval again.

Just take your 1280 graphic and resize the width to 960. Save it, reimport it to FCP and it should be good to go. I’ve actually started doing this. Create the graphic as 720×1280, then “squish” it to 960 and let FCP “unsquish” it.

That doesn’t make sense to me….why should you have to “squish” anything if you construct it at the proper pixel ratio?

Panasonic’s DVCPROHD is kind of like NTSC Anamorphic. It is an aspect size that is not really 1280×720 but squeezed to the 960 width. Then, upon decompression it expands the “smaller” frame size to fit the screen. So, when you created your full size sq pixel graphics you were doing the right thing. Now, just squeeze them to 960 wide and bring into FCP and it will behave just like the rest of your clips…get unsqueezed on output.

Exactly! Took me a few tries to figure that one out too.
