  • Dropped Frames on capture | I am at a loss…

    Ok.. I upgraded my computer from a Dual 1ghz G4 to a Dual 2ghz G5.

I could capture, edti etc.. fine with the G4 (to an ATA drive). On the new G5 (with a SATA drive). I can rarely capture without dropping frames. I am running FCPHD os 10.3.9, quicktime 7.1. I have ran through apples tech doc on dropped frames issues. I have completely erased and reformatted my media drive. I have tried capturing to other drives (a 7200rpm firewire 400 drive and the system drive). They both drop frames as well.. My next move is to re-format and reinstall everything. But again I was having this problem from day one. Ocassionally I can get it to capture but have not been able to figure out what allows it to capture correctly on occasion. I have been using FCP since 1.0 on numerous systems and this has me baffled…

    any ideas??

    thanks

Have you repaired permissions? Booting from the install DVD and repairing is crucial! Are you on a network? If so disconnect. Did you use the easy setups? That one check box that is forgotten can be the bane of your existence. Have you limited your length of capture? It may be trying to hard to allocate space for video. Have you tested with iMovie? To make sure there is no hardware or cabling issues. Have you prayed hard? Kidding.

    Hope this helps-

This is along shot, but I’m not sure if FCP 4.5 and QT7 play nice with each other. I would reinstall to 10.3.8 (not 10.3.9) and see what happens. how are you capturing? Do you have a capture card? You should be at least capturing to a separate internal drive and not your boot drive. Your system is fast enough to handle it, so it sounds like a configuration problem to me.

    thanks guys…

I tried the things Matthew suggested… to no avail…

Jeremy I am reinstalling the OS right now, will see if that helps… Is a single media only SATA drive fast enough? I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be but??? It is a maxtor 7200rpm 8mb cache drive…

    thanks

It is fast enough, but not ‘recommended’. An external drive or array is usually the best practice, but I won’t stop you from trying to use a second internal drive, just be aware of the risks. How much RAM do you have?

    Jeremy,
Hello.. I have 1.5GB ram… I tried what you suggested. Actually I just ran the installer disc that came with my G5 and installed 10.3.5 and tested.. now it works.. So I guess your presumptions were correct.. All is well now…

I sure wish Apple hadn’t crippled the G5 by only allowing one extra internal drive….

I hear ya, but you can buy a kit to stick more drives internally.

Correct, Mr. Jones. You will borrow power from inside the G5, but the SATA cables will come from a SATA controller card out of one of your PCI-X slots. I had this set up for a while using a rocket raid 1820 8 channel SATA raid controller. I have been through two of them so far. I do not like this set up. I have since switched to a Huge Media 4105. Pricey, but the reliability is key for running my business. I had good luck running the seritek line of card, but I needed more drives & speed for HD.
