Multi-camera editing and simple title questions
I’m beginning work on a college graduation using 2 cameras. During the handing out of the diplomas (which is the majority of the video), i’ll be cutting back and forth between two shots. Does fcp 4.5 have some sort of multi-screen effect that would make this type of editing easier?
Also, I have to put 400+ names on screen (ugh!). I’m new to fcp, what is the easiest way to type out down and dirty titles? I have live type, but that seems like a huge, time intensive process. I formerly worked with Avid and the cheesy titler is starting to look good right about now…

You should always do a SEARCH POSTS before asking a question.
There are scores of these same discussions to be found here.That said.
The new FCP 5 has a true multi-cam capability but for years, with earlier FCP versions, many of us used the following:
Syncing all of your video takes on separate layers is a preferred way to edit these kinds of things.
You can just stop playback at each point you want (need) a cut and click thru each of your angles, picking the one that best-fits the mood.OR… You can “shrink” one or all of the video tracks (with “Scale” in the Motion Tab) and position each so that ALL tracks are visible (though small) at the same time. Depending on your system (and the number or tracks) you may need to render this temporary “split-screen” so that it will play in real-time.
This will make fast work of your cut decisions.
Each time you decide which of the shots you want in the final edit, slice it (razor blade) on both ends, and “shift-drag” (won’t slip) it up to a new, TOP video track (which will be ultimately be your “final” track.)
After you are finished making cut decisions, select ALL the clips on this TOP track and “Remove Attributes” so all the video will snap back to full size and normal position.
Then add any effects.As for Titles:
Use “Title 3D” and NOT the FCP native Titlers.
“Title 3D” (from Boris) comes on the original FCP install disc, so if you don’t see it as one of your title options, grab the install disc and CHOOSE to install it.Just create the first Title and –add it to the timeline– with the right font(s), colors, and sizes. Position it correctly (remember that the vertical position MUST be an EVEN WHOLE NUMBER in the Motion tab).
Keep in mind how this composition will look with the LONGEST names.
Next add the “Opacity” RAMP-UP and RAMP-DOWN timings (for the dissolves in and out.)Then, from, the timeline, double-click this completed Title back into the viewer and simply drag it from the Viewer over into your Bin.
This first title will be your “template”.
You can keep dropping this “first one” from the Bin right back onto the timeline when you want a new Title.Just remember after you drop it onto the timeline EACH TIME to:
1. Double-click it back into the Viewer
2. “Type OVER it” with each new name. -

I had done a similar editing technique using multiple cams w/avid, I’m due for the fcp5 upgrade in the mail today, so i’ll check it out. thanks for your help, it will save me lots of time.tvs

“Down & dirty??? Make your first tilte on a new video layer, size & position to suit. A good idea here is to check who has the longest name so it all fits
Then alt drag the title to your new position, leaving the old version
Double click to get into viewer and tap in new name
repeatWhy not ask the college for a spreadsheet of all the names – then you could cut, paste & get the names exactly right.
