i need to get a bigger external firewire drive… just curious if you think getting an large iPod would be a good substitute; i need extra space for editing with FCP… but i was curious if the iPod could handle that. has anyone tried this out? you think it would run slower?

i’d like the option of easy transport, but most importantly: not being tied to a power out-let when editing w/my laptop.

No. This is not a good idea. Will it work? Maybe. But is an iPod a substitute for a full sized, fan cooled firewire drive? No way.

If you’re using your system to make money, then open up your wallet and buy the right tool for the job. If you’re just fooling around and want to see if it can be done, then go ahead and experiment. I’ve heard tales of HD played off of an iPod… but I wouldn’t want to rely on it day in and day out.

Mark’s right, don’t use it for editing.

That being said, I tend to copy all of my Final Cut project files onto the iPod every now and then. It’s a nice little backup drive since they don’t take up too much space.

It’ll definately work fine within it’s limits. DVCProHD is known to work on them, so you’ll definately get two DV streams from it at the very least. It won’t break or anything like that (unless it was going to anyways).

What’s important to you? How often to you need to bring media to your Powerbook? It is slower so you will be crippling your capabilites in comparison to a full-size FW. Then again, a full-size FW drive is very limmited compared to a stripped array. It just depends on what your needs are. Just remember, the internal disk on your Powerbook is just as fast as an iPod.
