LCD Flat panel for editing
Posted by Ken Weiss on June 1, 2005 at 10:56 pmI need some space on my desk and have to replace my CRT (a Sony Wega 20″) with an LCD. I’m a prosumer FCP user and DVD creator and don’t do broadcast video. Any suggestions on an LCD monitor to use instead of my CRT do FCP editing with? From 19-24″ is fine. Thanks.

June 1, 2005 at 11:03 pmDell’s new line of LCDs are supposed to be fantastic…my friend just bought 2 – 20 inchers and loves them…
The Apple displays are also beautiful but will cost you more money.

June 1, 2005 at 11:11 pmIf you color correct AT ALL. A LCD is simply not the right tool for the job. You want to use the right tool, don’t you? Or does tabletop space more important than the final color of your DVDs? I think not….
IMHO–Prosumer or Pro, you need a good CRT video monitor–regardless.
Stick with a good CRT, maybe go a step up on that WEGA with a pro Sony monitor. Might even be cheaper too. Even the Sony REPS admit that CRTs are much better for editing than LCD.
You can do what you want, but I can say that it’s probably gonna do more harm than good. Take that to the bank!

June 1, 2005 at 11:18 pmI assume you mean for a VIDEO MONITOR and not a computer screen.
I would stay away from that, for sure.
LCD’s make “everything look great” and for a critical editing monitor that can be a very bad thing.
LCD’s don’t reveal proper brightness and contrast levels… a scene that is under-exposed can look “just fine”.
Same goes for any color-correction decisions… you can make some really BAD mistakes with an LCD display.
Other than that… at least you’ll “get” to pay too much for an LCD compared to a trusty CRT (NTSC or PAL) video monitor.
All that said, a Sony Vega can be just as “forgiving” of a poor image (it makes it look “good”) as some LCD’s.
That’s why pro editors recommend a “critical” or “broadcast” monitor… they show you the REAL image. -

June 1, 2005 at 11:23 pmUnfortunatly, LCD is fast becoming a reality for all video monitoring due to all major CRT manufactures moving over to new technologies like LCD or Plasma. Before long you won’t have any choice. Sony have stopped all CRT manufacture, for instance, and only hold a stockpile of tubes for high end customers.
That said, LCD technology has come on in leaps and bounds. I’m using both a SD CRT and a HD LCD with the Decklink HDLink over SDI and the LCD compares very, very favourably indeed.

June 1, 2005 at 11:39 pmThen there are the Sony LUMA series of proffesional video monitors that Sony contradicts itself by saying they are equal
to their CRT series of Pro monitors. Visit http://www.sony.com/lumaKB

June 2, 2005 at 12:02 amYes, I’m looking for a video monitor and not computer screen. Seems like i need to stay with the CRT. The Wega has been pretty accurate so far, but as i said, i don’t do broadcast quality. Thanks for the input.

June 2, 2005 at 8:17 amAfter looking at various monitors I chose the Sharp Aquos 45″ LCD 1080 screen. All the comments about not being able to grade on an LCD and it making everything look good are just not true on this monitor. If anything it is painful watch SD DV on this screen after HD. As for colour accuracy and resolution, take a look for yourself. I too shared the same misguided attitude to LCDs before this monitor came to my attention.
That said, I haven’ got any other LCDs that I would reccomend, but technology is going to favour LCDs over CRT and Plasma, so get used to it.

June 2, 2005 at 12:18 pmMichael, I’d be curious to know what it looks like running off SD out of your Decklink and through the HDLink to the monitor? I’m using an Apple 23″ display on the HDLink and it works very well.

Probably, at some point, yes. But more importantly, manufacturers are starting to move away from CRTs, regardless of whether or not they’re still better. At some point soon, you’ll have no choice. And we’ll just have to get used to it.
