  • maximum size internal sata?

Posted by Joslyn on May 27, 2005 at 6:14 am

i was wondering what the maximum size serial ata drive can be put into a g5? i keep seeing recommendations for 250MB. i see there are drives that go up to 400GB and was wondering if this size would be fine to put in a g5 considering i can only put in one more sata drive? thanks.

The new Powermacs can be bought with an internal 400GB drive optionally.
It would surprise me a lot is 250GB would be a maximum in older G5’s. (But I can’t confirm a 100% shure)

    Hi Jaser

I think the 250GB limit has been discussed in the past because at the time that was the maximum drive size available. As far as I am aware, there is no (theoretical) limit

I just bought a 300 GB drive for my G5.

I looked at the 400 GB drives, but the ones I found all had an 8 MB cache built in. The 300 GB drive had a 16 MB cache. I thought that was more important so I got the 300.(It was a Maxtor.)

It’s been working fine for the last 3 weeks.

I’ve been running 400gig Hitachi for several months, no problems.

great! thanks for the feedback! good to know since i will be working w/ dvcpro-hd footage in the near future…so i’ll benefit from a bigger drive.

another question, do i understand correctly that i can only add 1 additional drive to a stock G5? thanks again!

On a side note, i’ve just received my new g5 with a 400GB drive in it – is there a free utility that I can use to test the data transfer rate I could expect in sustained use??

    Cheers,

    Paul

This may be slightly off subject but check out – https://www.transintl.com/macupgrades/index.cfm – and look at the swiftdata 200. I have one installed in my G5 and am running 8bit uncompressed with 1.2tb with no troubles so far. I am running all Hitachi 400gb drives in my setup.

You can fit up to 10 SATA drives inside a G5. Check out Wiebetech’s G5Jam+. You will get incredible sustained data rates with this type of RAID configuration.

There other options to fit more than the standard stock two drives inside the G5.

    G5 Dual 2.5 160GB System 400GB Media Drive ATI 9800 256MB 6 GB RAM
Dual Gig Quicksilver 1GB RAM 80 GB System drive (3) 250 GB internal media storage

Let me correct myself. Physically you can fit a maximum of 6 drives inside the G5 for a total of 2.4TB (400GB drives). The G5 Jam+ allows 4 additional external SATA drives for a total of 1.6 TB.

steve, am i correct in saying that i can only add 1 additional sata drive in a G5(w/o a 3rd party card) and if i wanted to have more than 2 sata drives, i will need to purchase an additional card to run the extra drives? thanks!
