  • Reasons I hate MOTION….. please tell me I’m wrong.

This was a reply I made to another posting but I think it deserved it’s own thread…..

    ——————-

Frankly, I found MOTION to be my biggest disapointment from the Production Suite. Mind you, I did have fairly high expectations, but I wasn’t expecting a complete bomb.

    Reasons I hate it:

    1. The moment I have more than 5 layers, the whole thing bogs down.
    2. Going between menus (Inspector, Timeline, etc), is extremely choppy
    3. Causes repeated crashes within FCP
    4. ‘Real-Time’…. that’s’ a joke. I would consider AE to be more real time even though they don’t advertise it.
    5. Way more limited than AE in terms of features and control.

Somebody please tell me it’s just me and I will be more than happy to re-install it if I have to…. but for now, that’s my experience.

Well, here’s the way I look at it – it’s 1/3 the price of AE and has probably about 1/3 the ability. You’re right about the menu navigation. I guess I’m way to use to AE, but I hate parts of the interface.

I hear you on all you complants, but do you remember or even know what the first AE’s were like? they were not even 1/8th of what motion is today. and the people at apple know this and hold off on the good stuff / better functions for down the road.

You might need a better computer, or the Motion forum.

FCP 1 while really cool for the price was no pinic. And as pointed out, AE was not the giant it is now at first. Give Apple credit for what they do very well…innovate, revolutionize, basically reinvent the wheel. It’s just that with the cost of creating these giants, it makes sense to put aout a product of limited ability and grow it based on real world feedback.

    Good points Bob.

Remember the Mac 512? What a joke, hard to beleive the subject of one of the greatest commercials of all time, what a letdown when I first saw one. I didn’t take Mac seriously until year 4!

And so true of the early AEs!

Ah, the never ending vicious cycle of upgrading. Motion creates hardware sells for Apple. Hey, I’m not knocking it. Its good old capitalism. No one knows it better than Steve Jobs and Apple.

To be honest I don’t think that’s really true. I would be surprised if Motion users where not just a subset of FCP users, who of course already have Apple computers. So I’m not so sure how many new sales Motion is generating. FCP and FCE, now that’s a different matter.

I’m talking about existing users who haven’t upgraded in some time. Motion requirements are more steep than FCP’s. You have a pretty big installed base with FCP who are going to jump on Motion. Your G5 sales have completely stalled. What better way to sell new computers?

Just in case people think it’s not working right because of my system….

I’m running a brand spanking new Duel 2ghz G5 with 2.5 gigs of ram and an upgraded 256mg graphics card. Not to mention the Linkedd Firewire 800 lacies….

You’de think I’de get SOME performance out of that.

turn of drop shadows and other heavy effects while you preview – you will find that Motion gives you quite a degree of preview performance. RAM preview with the effects.
