I have a question about partitioning hard drives and media storage for video editing —

I have (recently acquired) a dual G4 1.2Ghz tower with two internal drives, 60GB and 200GB, and I have an external 120GB drive. Some people suggest that media should always be captured to a different drive than project files…any thoughts? And what are the advantages / disadvantages of partitioning drives…say, dividing the 200GB drive into 4 x 50GB areas.

    Thanks!

Please use the search function in the tool bar to look up partitioning. Someone seems to ask about this every week, at least, and if you go back a month or 2, you’ll doubtless find all the arguments against partitioning your media drives. There is no reason to partition your media drives (unless you want them to be less stable & slower).

To add a footnote to Arnie’s recommendations: partitioning any drive will also use up valuable hard drive space.

I agree to the above. Partitioning is not needed. I went through some hard drive issues and an Atto tech got things working. He shared his thoughts and also feels that partitioning offer no advantages.

Yes, you must keep your media files away from the internal main system drive. This drive will house your project files.
